Rockapella - A-Punk
I present to you, the guys who inspired the name of this blog….A Cappella legends Rockapella singing Vampire Weekend’s breakout song “A-Punk” on their latest Release BANG!
The Bubs have a penchant for picking forgotten hits or current ones that have fallen just under the radar to cover in their albums and I personally find it extremely refreshing not to have to listen to yet another version of the same old top 40’s track that has been covered to death.
But it is precisely because they choose to steer clear of songs that are too popular that tracks on their album are sometimes unfamiliar. I’ve encountered many songs that I’ve never heard before on their albums (their version is often the first version of the song that I hear). It takes a fair bit of time and rather intense listening to get acquainted with the song before you actually fall in love with it. Case in point: Dog Problems by The Format.
This one took a while to grow on me. I’m still surprised that I like it so much. On the first listen, I thought it was a very odd choice. It was only after repeated plays that I conceded that this is a really, really solid song. It’s one of the kookiest and also one of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard, and that’s not something you’ll catch by listening to it casually (I suppose I’m only saying this because I know far too many people who listen to melodies but have no clue as to what the lyrics are about). The circus fanfare & the general racket of the choruses initially distracts from the lyrics, but once you actually bother to let the frustration in the lyrics sink in, the false cheeriness just serves to amplify the pain.
This track isn’t upbeat & infectious like “Vehicle” or hauntingly beautiful like “Don’t Think Twice”. But sometimes, it’s songs that don’t immediately capture your attention but creep their way into your consciousness that make the deepest impact. :)
Because I find it difficult to celebrate Valentine’s Day without thinking of this song, here’s Overboard’s rendition of Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You.”
Fun fact: Alfredo Austin, the soloist of this song, is also the R. Kelly impersonator seen occasionally on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart!
